| YAZ may increase the risk of severe side effects including blood clots, stroke, and heart attack. The risk of blood clots is the greatest during the 1st year of use. This risk is greatest when first starting the Pill and when restarting the same or even a different Pill following a four week or a larger vacation.
Notably, YAZ contains drospirenone, a different kind of hormone that for some may raise your potassium levels too high. Talk to your healthcare provider if you are on daily long-term treatment for a chronic condition with other prescription drugs that may also increase your potassium levels. You may want to consider having a blood test to evaluate your potassium level through the 1st calendar month of taking YAZ.
